What if a real drum kit could go anywhere?

The NUVO Zip-Kit is a fully acoustic drum set that packs down into a backpack-sized case, ready to travel from rehearsal room to stage, from community space to festival field and from bedroom to busking spot.

For decades, drums have been the least portable instrument in the room. Guitars travel. Keyboards travel. Drums stay put. The Zip-Kit changes that without sacrificing the physical feel, layout and sound that drummers rely on.

Designed from experience

“Drum sets are just a different animal,” says Dave Wish, founder of Music Will and inventor of the NUVO Zip-Kit. The size of a traditional kit has always dictated where and how it can be played. Rather than shrinking the experience or replacing it with pads, Wish set out to preserve what makes drumming real and redesign everything else.

The result is a fully acoustic, compact drum set that sets up in minutes and adjusts to fit players from age four through to adults. Drums and cymbals are fully height-adjustable, and the kit can be reconfigured for left-handed players in seconds simply by rotating the pedals and hi-hat. Four telescoping posts allow players to expand the setup with additional toms and cymbals as their playing develops.

A development process guided by musicians

By his own estimate, Wish built well over one hundred prototypes, many undergoing multiple iterations. Sound, ergonomics, layout and feel were tested and refined repeatedly, often guided by working musicians rather than engineers. Professional drummers consistently recognise that the Zip-Kit behaves and responds like a real drum kit because it was designed from the drummer’s perspective first. Notable drummers who played the Zip-Kit during development include Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Greg Bissonette.

Rethinking where drumming happens

The goal was not to miniaturise a drum kit, but to recreate the physical experience of drumming using new assumptions, guided by how drumming feels rather than how a drum kit is supposed to look.

In doing so, it reshapes not only where drums can be played, but how they are perceived. The message is clear: musicianship is not defined by scale or volume, but by engagement and expression. Music should be social, shared, and woven into daily life.

By reducing volume, size, and setup time simultaneously, the Zip-Kit challenges that assumption. It makes drumming possible on the move, in small venues, backstage, community spaces, and the classroom.
