Spike T. Smith is a British professional freelance session drummer, performer and songwriter. Originally from Wales, he has played and performed since the age of thirteen, and has been described by Rhythm magazine as “the British version of American session heavyweight Josh Freese.” It is a fair comparison, given how freely he moves between scenes and styles.
Over many years he has worked internationally with some of the world’s finest artists, including Morrissey, punk legends The Damned, Killing Joke, the New York Dolls, Sham 69, H.R. of Bad Brains, G.B.H., Steve Ignorant of Crass, and Sacrilege, to name only a few.
He has also recorded with many of the most respected producers in music, a roster that reflects his remarkable range: Youth (The Verve, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Crowded House, Killing Joke), Jerry Finn (Green Day, Blink-182, Rancid, Sum 41, Pennywise), Alex Silva (Manic Street Preachers, Suede), Jagz Kooner (Primal Scream, Oasis, Garbage, Massive Attack, Kasabian), Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Saxon, Testament, Exodus, Arch Enemy, Opeth), Harvey Birrell (Therapy?, Buzzcocks, Crass, Snuff), Brendon Lynch (Paul Weller, Primal Scream, Ocean Colour Scene) and Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir, At The Gates, New Model Army). Together, those sessions span punk, post-punk, metal and mainstream pop.
Comfortable across a wide range of styles, Spike loves nothing more than being on the road. Based in Cambridgeshire, he is available for session, live, studio and depping work worldwide, alongside online and private tuition, drum workshops and music consultancy. If you need an experienced, proven drummer for a project, tour, or a band you produce or manage, you can contact Spike for a chat through his website or socials.
