Ebenezer won Young Drummer Of The Year 2020. Sponsored by PDP drums, Meinl cymbals, Gibraltar hardware, Gewa cases and Remo drum heads
2020’s prestigious Young Drummer Of The Year is now in its 19th year. Winner, Ebenezer Sendey, is a 16 year old drummer from South Ockendon, Essex. He has been playing drums for 12 years since he was 4 years old. Ebenezer’s favourite drummers consist of artists such as Lacy Comer, Calvin Rodgers and Devon Taylor. He has played with other known instrumentalist and singers including the African Gospel artist, Joe Mettle and Passion UK.
Winning this competition would mean the world to Ebenezer, it is his dream as he has a strong passion to become a professional musician and feels this is a great stepping stone. He first picked up drum sticks at the age of 3 and grasped the hang on the instrument at age 4, ever since he has never looked back – drumming has become a part of him.
Young Drummer Of The Year
The inaugural competition kicked off in October 2002 when a story was posted on the mikedolbear.com website, inviting young drummers from around the UK to enter the first annual Young Drummer of the Year competition. The competition was put together to give the country’s young drumming talent a national and indeed international platform, which we hope will be the first steps in their musical career.
Since then, the event has seen tremendous growth. It has established itself as an internationally recognised event, attracting an ever increasing number of entries and seeing the very best in terms of drumming talent. Sponsorship from various high profile companies has meant that the competition has continued to improve, both in terms of popularity and scale of production.
The finals of the competition are held in February at a central location (venue yet to be announced for next year’s event). A great team of volunteers are assembled for the event each year, all helping to make it a fantastic experience for the competitors and audience alike.
In the year following the finals, the winner is kept very busy! Past winners have made numerous TV and radio appearances, as well as support slots for the like of Steve Smith, Thomas Lang, JoJo Mayer, Aaron Spears, Dave Weckl, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez and Stanton Moore and every winner traditionally opens the UK Drum Show in Manchester.
2021 entries open on 1st October, for more info go to www.youngdrummeroftheyear.co.uk
